A comparison between 2018 and 2024 best-selling cars shows how Indian consumer preference has changed dramatically in just 6 years. In 2018, Maruti and Hyundai dominated the top 10 rankings with 7 and 3 products, respectively. The market too was dominated by affordable hatchbacks, commanding 7 positions.
2024 poses a stark contrast. Tata Punch, due to its SUV silhouette and multiple drivetrain options, became the best-selling car. Hyundai is reduced to just one position with Creta, whereas Tata and Mahindra managed twin and single slots, respectively, in the top 10 ranking. Another big leap was Maruti Ertiga MUV becoming the third best-selling vehicle in India. Mahindra Scorpio is the most expensive product in the top 10 ranking, which also marks the journey of the Indian consumer from affordable to aspirational products.
SUV and crossover body-style products are now in the majority in the top 10 ranking, and hatchbacks are reduced to mere 3 positions.
