Tata Nexon EV with sales of 525 units in April 2021 continued as India’s Best Selling Electric car for the month with a market share of over 70 percent. The Passenger EV segment in India registered sales of 749 units in April 2021 and declined 26.5 percent when compared to 1,019 units sold in March 2021. The lockdown in several parts of the country due to the second wave of Covid19 impacted EV Sales as well in April 2021.
Tata Motors' share in the segment increased to over 77 percent and has clear dominance. The Nexon EV has emerged as a big success for Tata Motors and the cumulative sales of the model since its launch is 4,616 units. Nexon EV contributed over 7.5 percent on Nexon model volumes in April 2021 - i.e. 525 out of 6,938 Nexon's sold were the EV variants. The electric compact SUV has seen rapid consumer acceptance and boasts of a value-for-money price tag and also drives better than its ICE counterpart!
Tata Motors Nexon EV sales declined by almost 17 percent in April 2021 when compared to March 2021. However; it was able to increase its market share in the segment and alone contributed to over 70 percent sales in the segment.
MG ZS EV had recorded its all-time highest monthly sales in March 2021 (source). However; the volumes almost halved in April 2021 and the model's market share dropped to 20.8 percent from 25.4 percent in March 2021.
Tata's other EV model Tigor EV recorded sales of 56 units in April 2021 and was down 23 percent from 73 units in March 2021.
Hyundai Kona recorded a marginal increase in volumes in Apr'21 vs Mar'21. However; the sales of Kona have fallen much lower when compared to the rival MG's ZS EV.
Electric SUVs still lead the charge – 3 out of the 4 Passenger EV models are Electric SUVs. Near to 93 percent of Electric Cars sold in April were e-SUVs!
