Electric Cars Going Mainstream
Grab some popcorn and lay back on the couch. The EV war is about to begin.
When a carmaker as mass market as Hyundai brings an electric car with a name as recognizable as Creta, it sends a clear signal that electric cars are going mainstream.
While Hyundai have had experience selling 2 electric cars in India, their names were clearly suggestive that Hyundai weren't expecting to achieve large volumes with either.
One was the Kona Electric with a somewhat mass market pricing, a decent range and respectable number of features. The other was the Ioniq 5, which went on sale in January 2023. Considering the asking price of Rs. 45.0 lakh for the Ioniq, it certainly wasn't going to bring in great numbers.
With the Creta Electric, and the imminent launch of Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, the electric cars appear to be moving on from the early adopter stage to the early majority. In product or service adoption, this is called crossing the chasm. Any product or technology that fails to get past the chasm disappears into the oblivion. And this is the most difficult phase in an innovative product's life.

The Hyundai Creta Electric's name suggests that it is here to push EVs past the chasm, and that this time around, Hyundai are expecting decent volumes from EV sales. Believe it or not, the Creta Electric's success will help Maruti e Vitara and vice versa. In fact, if the EVs are able to cross the chasm, it'll help all carmakers. And being one of the top carmakers, Hyundai will be ready with a plan to establish their leadership in this sub-market as well.
Say what you will about the Mahindra EVs, the Tata EVs and the Chinese carmakers like MG Motors and BYD, but they are not capable of getting the early majority to buy an electric car. They can make their cars more attractive, more affordable, high performance, feature rich and offer many other things but they will remain for the early adopters. Without the participation from Hyundai, Maruti, Toyota and Kia, EVs are unlikely to gain a serious consideration from the majority of car buyers. We are about to see the demand for EVs grow drastically in the financial year 2025-26. The E Vitara, Creta Electric, Carens EV and Toyota's Urban EV will have make it happen.
If you are on the fence about buying an electric car, this is a great time to be out shopping as the taxes are still low and public charging is also relatively cheap. Once the EV demand hits its peak, all the gains that are to be had from an EV will have deteriorated. They will start to lose some of the tax breaks while the electricity at public charging stations will attract insane taxes --- like petrol, diesel and CNG.
The price you will pay in exchange for making the jump is in terms of reliability and innovation. While most EVs, in general, will offer a decent reliability during your ownership, the pace of innovation in unlike what the auto industry is used to. So, you will have to live with a car, which may start to feel old next to one with newer tech within a few years. The car you buy will continue to work as expected. It's just that the other cars will have gotten to a level where yours might start to look old in comparison. If you can make peace with that, and you have to buy a new car in 2025-26, then you should choose an EV.
