Shifting Gears
Maruti Suzuki finally brought a car to the market with a 5-star safety rating. The Dzire made Tata reconsider their decision to call it quits on their small cars.
You see, Maruti distanced themselves from using safety ratings as a marketing strategy. Because they have other USP, such as:
Reasonable acquisition cost (in most cases)
Low maintenance costs
Low fuel costs
Better resale
Strong reliability
Easy to find spares and qualified mechanic (both, 1st party and 3rd party options)
Meanwhile, besides the safety rating, Tata’s strengths were:
Design
So, Tata Motors needed the safety rating thing to work as a marketing strategy more than Maruti did. They had no other strong selling point. Thanks to the high liquidity in the market, it worked well for Tata Motors.
It’s difficult to say whether Maruti Suzuki embraced the safety rating thing or fell into the trap. Either way, it marks the beginning of the end of using safety ratings for marketing. If every other car is 5-star rated, then it’s no longer worth promoting.
