Continued Downfall
Here’s a funny coincidence. Tata Motors have dropped 25% since the day MG announced the Windsor.
After generating multi-fold wealth for their shareholders, rising from around Rs. 70 per share in Covid and shooting up to 1170 a few months ago, Tata Motors seem to be in a continued downward spiral. Their share price has fallen 35% from the peak with no apparent bounce pads. That’s about a 17x jump from Covid bottom to their peak.
It’s unclear if MG, along with Jindal and their Indian shareholders, have a role to play in this or if the share was long overdue for a correction after a continued rally. Or perhaps something is cooking within Tata, which we don’t know yet and the share price is factoring in the same.
On the surface, Tata Motors seem to be doing just fine. But the Tata Motors share price we see is not just about their mass-market passenger car business. The share price also includes their business from JLR and commercial side. Both of these are big contributors towards Tata’s topline and bottomline.
What do you think is the reason behind this continued weakness? Let us know in the comment section.

Performance-Based Insights
Top 3 Performers (October 2024 Sales)
Punch (15,740)
Nexon (14,759)
Curvv (5,357): Tata Motors are off to a great start with the Curvv. Pricing it surprisingly well from day 1 and offering all of the features to match the segment standards, packaged in a fresh design seems to be working in Tata’s favour. While Tata were one of the first movers in the Punch and Nexon segments, the Curvv entered a highly competitive and crowded space. So, it will naturally have to struggle to gain any market share. But an average of 5k sales in the last 2 months means they are off to a great start. The Curvv has the potential to hit and sustain a 5-figure monthly production number. Unless Tata get too greedy too soon and hike the prices to match or exceed segment standards.
Gainers (YoY % Change)
Here are the top 3 YoY gainers of October 2024 in the Tata portfolio:
Safari (+55.67%)
Punch (+2.76%)
Harrier (+2.69%)
Top 3 Losers (YoY % Change)
Here’s a look at the top 3 YoY losers in October 2024 in the Tata portfolio:
Altroz (-55.85%)
Tigor (-40.75%)
Nexon (-12.60%)
Tiago (-12.58%)
A big YoY drop in Altroz despite the addition of Racer means it’s one of two things:
Customers really want SUVs and don’t want hatchbacks even if they are well priced and quite competitive.
Tata had to make room for the Curvv in their production line. So, the production drop may be temporary.
Gainers (MoM % Change)
Nexon (+28.67%)
Safari (+26.89%)
Harrier (+21.69%)
Top 3 Losers (MoM % Change)
Altroz (-4.21%)

Tata SUVs continue to gain YoY while the hatchbacks and sedan continue to lose YoY.
