Performance-Based Insights
Top 3 Performers (September 2024 Sales)
Hyundai have 2 sedans and 2 mass market hatchbacks and neither of them manage to make it to the top 3 performer list.
Overall dispatch numbers of Hyundai barely helped them hold on to their 2nd position as Mahindra came very close — barely 40 units behind Hyundai. Not only did Mahindra price their Thar Roxx quite well for the performance, style, capability and features, their pricing also threatens the Creta, which has led the C-SUV segment pretty much since inception. According to Mahindra, the Roxx accumulated 1.76 lakh bookings within the first hour. In a lukewarm market, this figure sounds unrealistic. Quite literally!
Things are not looking good for Hyundai as they are taking their IPO live on October 15, 2024.According to recent reports, their grey market price (GMP) is about 75% down. It’s difficult to put a finger on the cause of this. It could be due to the perception of being overpriced to begin with (as with almost all IPOs) or because of the threat Mahindra pose to their 2nd position.
However, other analysts also suggest that their GMP is trading at a premium of Rs. 165, that is the upper limit of the IPO + Rs. 165 premium. Or, Rs. 1,960 + Rs. 165 = Rs. 2,125. Surprisingly, one of the merchant bankers executing the Hyundai Motor India IPO are Kotak Mahindra Capital Company.

Gainers (YoY % Change)
Here are the top 3 YoY gainers of September 2024 in the Hyundai portfolio:
Alcazar (+37.18%): Thanks to a major redesign, feature revision and price correction, the Alcazar managed to post a healthy 37% YoY gain. It’s not enough to catapult it to the list of top 3 performers, but considering the price point where the Alcazar operates, close to 3,000 units a month is substantial. They appear to have finally made the Alcazar relevant for 3-row SUV buyers.
Creta (+25.05%): The Creta continued its strong momentum but failed to acquire the top spot. Ertiga and Swift claimed the 1st and 2nd position overall.
Aura (+14.41%)
Top 3 Losers (YoY % Change)
Kona (-100%): The Kona is no longer on sale (unless some dealer in your region has left over stock). We expect the Creta-based electric car to take the game forward and replace the Kona EV.
Ioniq 5 (-82.39%): The onslaught of electric cars from BYD and their price correction strategy seems to be hurting the Ioniq 5’s prospects. BYD Seal, eMax 7 and the more affordable Atto3 seem to offer a more luxurious appeal than the Ioniq 5. Since BYD don't make affordable mass market cars, their options in the higher price range come across as more luxurious even if the Ioniq can match the BYD in terms of features, range and pricing.
Tucson (-58.65%): As the demand shrinks with the economy, Tucson is another casualty. In fact, most cars in Hyundai’s portfolio witnessed a drop in their YoY performance. Only the Creta, Alcazar and Aura managed to post a YoY growth in September 2024.
Verna (-54.10%): Despite reasonable pricing from Day 1, the Verna too is losing steam as it lost more than 50% in YoY sales figures.
Gainers (MoM % Change)
Alcazar (+145.43%)
Venue (+12.92%)
Exter (+4.16%)
Top 3 Losers (MoM % Change)
Ioniq 5 (-22.50%)
Tucson (-21.60%)
I20 (-9.87%)
Since MoM change doesn’t mean much in the broader view, we’ll leave it without any comments.
Body-Type Based
While the cumulative SUV dispatch numbers for Hyundai in September 2024 remained consistent YoY, the hatch and sedans contracted a fair bit.
