Over 4.2 Lakh Compact SUVs were sold in India for FY2021 and it emerged as of the fastest-growing segments in the Indian market. Almost 16 percent of the cars sold in India were Sub-4m Compact SUVs and 70 percent of the sales came from the Top 10 States of India!

The figures reported here are Dispatch Data (cars dispatched from the OEMs to their respective authorized dealers).
The sales period in consideration here is FY2020 (Apr’19 – Mar’20).
Sub-4m Compact SUV figures shall be analyzed in this article. The models in consideration are Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Ford Ecosport, Honda WR-V, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Mahindra XUV300 & TUV300.
The data shall not be 100% accurate. As these are dealer dispatch data; there may be a certain level of deviance. Ex: A dealer may be selling cars in multiple cities, but the dispatch data may be recorded to a central billing outlet.
Let us first see the Statewise Compact SUV Sales Figures for FY2021 –
Uttar Pradesh is India’s biggest market for Compact SUVs! Almost 10.4% of India’s Compact SUVs are sold in UP alone. The state sold an average of 3,974 Compact SUV’s per month in FY2021.
PS: The biggest state in terms of Hatchback Sales was Maharashtra and UP had ranked third (Source). Poor Road conditions and the need for a rugged vehicle have made a higher spurt in Compact SUV sales in Uttar Pradesh.
Maharashtra ranked second in terms of Compact SUV sales and contributed to 10.3% of the country’s C-SUV volumes. However; Maharashtra had ranked first in terms of medium+premium hatchback sales.
Karnataka was the largest Southern state and nation’s 3rd ranked state for C-SUV volumes. Kerala and Telangana too have a strong contribution in C-SUV volumes and ranked sixth and seventh respectively. Do note that Karnataka was also South’s No.1 state in terms of hatchback sales.
Haryana outsold states like Kerala, Telangana & Delhi to emerge No.5 in the ranking table. Haryana’s love for C-SUVs is pretty evident in the sales volumes.
Gujarat came in 4th in C-SUV sales; whereas it had ranked second in hatchback sales!
Not a single East Zone state fared in the Top 10. However; West Bengal was East Zone’s biggest state in terms of C-SUV sales and contributed to 2.6% of nations C-SUV volumes.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza emerged as the best-selling Compact SUV in UP, Haryana, Telangana, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Brezza is the highest selling model in 5 out of the top 10 selling states! Brezza sells the highest in Uttar Pradesh.
While Hyundai's Venue is the highest selling model in 3 out of top 10 selling states - Karnataka, Gujarat & Tamil Nadu! Also, Venue sells the highest in Maharastra (in terms of absolute volumes).
Tata Nexon is the highest selling model in Maharashtra & Kerala - beating the market leaders Brezza and Venue!
Kia Sonet sells the highest in Maharashtra followed by Karnataka & Gujarat

Hyundai Venue sells highest in 3 out of Top 10 cities - Chennai, Lucknow and Mumbai. In terms of absolute volumes; Bangalore is the biggest market for Venue.
Tata Nexon is the Market Leader in 1 out of Top 10 Cities - Pune overtaking the likes of Brezza & Venue. However, Bangalore is the biggest market for Nexon. Interestingly, Nexon sells more than Brezza & Venue in Bangalore.
Mahindra XUV300, Ford Ecosport & Renault Kiger sells the highest too in Bangalore! No wonder; Bangalore emerged as the largest market for Sub-4m Compact SUVs.
Toyota Urban Cruiser & Honda WRV sells highest in Delhi. And Nissan's Magnite Sells highest in Hyderabad.
With just 7 months of sales, Kia's Sonet became No1 selling Compact SUV in Bangalore (beating market leaders Brezza & Venue)! Even in Pune, Sonet sells more than Brezza & Venue.
If we look into monthly average nos, Sonet is the highest selling Compact SUV (<4M) in 8 out of Top 10 Cities) -
Compact SUV has caught the fancy of all the automakers in India and almost every OEM has jumped in the segment. India also saw the highest number of new model launches in the segment last year. Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger were the latest entrants in the segment. Even Citroen is planning to launch its Sub-4m Compact SUV segment with the CC21. The segment is now one of the most competitive segments in the country and has tremendous volume potential too.
