The Mid SUV segment continued its good run and grew an impressive 138% YoY and 8% MoM. Newer entrants such as Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus have helped the segment to bolster the sales volumes.
Among the top ten Mid-SUVs sold in India in March 2021, Hyundai Creta led the chart with a sales volume of 12,640 units. During the same month last year, the Korean major had sold 6,706 units. Creta had received a major generation upgrade in March 2020 which has helped it ramp up its sales volume with more features and better performance on offer since then.
It was followed by its cousin Kia Seltos with a monthly sales volume of 10,557 units in March 2021. In comparison, Kia had dispatched 7,466 units of Seltos last year in March, thus resulting in an increase in YoY sales by 41 percent.
MG Hector witnessed an impressive YoY growth of 237 percent last month with sales of 4,720 units and was its all-time highest monthly sales figure (source).
Maruti S-Cross took the fourth spot with dispatches of 2,535 units last month. Maruti Suzuki did not sell the crossover during the same period last year as it was taken off the shelves along with the rest of the diesel models. It made its re-appearance later that year with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The fifth spot was taken by Mahindra Scorpio which garnered sales of 2,331 units last month. With 40 units of Scorpio sold in March 2020, it registered a YoY growth of 5728 percent. However; the model volumes fell 34 percent in March 2021 when compared to February 2021.
The sixth spot was occupied by Tata Harrier with sales of 2,284 units in March 2021. During the same period last month, Tata Motors sold only 632 units of the SUV thereby recording YoY growth of 261 percent.
Harrier was followed by its sibling Safari and a total of 2,148 units of Safari were dispatched to the dealerships.
Safari was followed by Jeep Compass which registered a sales volume of 1,360 units. FCA sold 163 units of the SUV in March last year, witnessing YoY growth of 734 percent. It is to be noted that Compass received a facelift earlier this year.
Mahindra XUV500 took the ninth spot with sales of 603 units last month. The Mid-SUV witnessed YoY growth of 6600 percent since Mahindra was able to sell just 9 units of it in March last year due to lockdown. The next-generation model of XUV500 is on its way later this year.
The SUV which was the pioneer in the segment back was lagging at the tenth place. Renault was able to sell only 252 units of Duster last month as compared to 150 units during the same month last year.
